Curtain Falls on Second Abilimpics China

The Second Abilimpics China, a national competition testing the professional skills of handicapped people, closed Saturday in Beijing.

The Second Abilimpics China, a national competition testing the professional skills of handicapped people, closed Saturday in Beijing.

Almost 600 people, in 31 delegations, joined in the contests, ranging from computer programming to handicraft making, which weredivided into five categories and 22 items. The competition was held in three phases in Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing, respectively.

Some of the winners are expected to join the Chinese delegationto the Sixth International Abilimpics in India this November, according to the organizer.

The first such national competition was held in Wuhan, the capital of central China's Hubei Province, in 1989. It will be held once every five years in the future.

The event is part of the government's efforts to resolve the problem of employment for the handicapped population, which tops 60 million, or 5 percent of the country's total population.
