Chinese President Hu Jintao and President Lucio Gutierrez Borbua of the Republic of Ecuador exchanged views on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common concern in talks held Tuesday afternoon.

Hu said over the past more than 20 years since the two countries established diplomatic ties, bilateral relations have seen steady development, with increased high-level exchanges, broadened exchanges and cooperation in various fields, and mutual understanding and support in international affairs.

He said the two countries have broad common views on protecting world peace, promoting common development and other significant issues. China will work together as always with Ecuador to promote the long-lasting and steady friendly cooperative relationship between the two countries to a new level in the new century.

He pointed out that the Chinese side pays attention to strengthening Sino-Ecuadorian economic and trade cooperation, and is willing to carry out multi-channel and multi-pattern cooperation with Ecuador on the principles of equality, mutual-benefit and supplementing each other.

China encourages and supports its enterprises to participate in Ecuadorian construction, and also welcomes Ecuadorian enterprises to invest in China, he said.

Hu introduced to the Ecuadorian guest the Chinese government's principled stance on the Taiwan issue, and expressed appreciation for the reiteration by the Ecuadorian government that it adheres to the "one-China" policy. He also expressed thanks for the valuable support China has received from Ecuador in international affairs.

Talking about Sino-Latin American relations, Hu said in the new century China attaches special importance to Sino-Latin American relations, and is willing to reinforce dialogues and exchanges with Latin American countries, develop friendly cooperation and step up mutual coordination and support in international affairs, and jointly protect the interests of developing countries.

Gutierrez said the Ecuadorian people treasure their friendship and cooperation with the Chinese people. Over the past two decades, political ties between the two countries have developed smoothly, and cooperation in economy and trade, agriculture, culture and other fields has produced rich results.

He said today's China is developing fast and is playing an increasingly important role in international affairs. He stressed that the Ecuadorian government is willing to strengthen bilateral relations, especially mutually-beneficial cooperation in energy, agriculture, mining, new and high-technology, telecommunications, tourism and other fields.

He said he fully agreed with the five principles of peaceful coexistence advocated by China in international affairs, saying that Ecuador adheres to the "one-China" principle and supports the Chinese government's efforts to reunify the country with the policy of "one country, two systems."

Before the talks, President Hu held a ceremony to welcome President Gutierrez to China. At the close of the talks, they attended a signing ceremony between the two countries for six cooperative documents involving economic and technological cooperation, plant quarantine, crude oil, cultural exchanges, and some other fields.
