China will allocate another 2.2 billion yuan (about 265 million US dollars) in 2004 to ensure safety in working coal mines nationwide, according to an executivemeeting of the State Council chaired by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao Wednesday in Beijing.

In 2002 and 2003, China earmarked a total of 4 billion yuan for this purpose, according to State Council sources.

At the meeting, a representative of the State Administration of Work Safety reported on the national coal mine production safety situation and measures to prevent further tragic accidents.

In north China's Shanxi Province, three serious coal gas explosions between Aug. 11 and 18 left nearly 100 dead. The Shanxiprovincial government ordered all coal mines in the province to close for one week for safety checks.

Liu Zhenhua, governor of Shanxi, briefed the meeting on the three accidents and the strict measures adopted by the Shanxi government to ensure future safety.

The meeting called on government officials and entrepreneurs togo to the production safety front-line, demanding the speedy upgrading of safe production technology. The meeting urged that special safety checks be made and the consolidation of the supervisory responsibility of government departments at all levels.

The meeting decided to establish a State Council committee for safe production.

The meeting also approved a report from the State Development and Reform Commission on the examination of some 2008 Olympic Games infrastructure programs, and recommending optimization of resources in this regard as well as high efficiency and quality inrelevant construction projects.
