The China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC) plans to build a new shipyard in south China's Guangzhou city, which will be the largest one in south China.

On Thursday, the CSSC signed a contract here with the Guangzhou municipal government for the shipyard project.

Guangzhou will select a 4.5 km-long site on the coast of Longxue Islet, a part of Nansha, off Guangzhou, as the shipyard site.

The new shipyard will make Guangzhou one of China's shipbuilding centers, following Dalian in the north and Shanghai at the mouth of the Yangtze River.

Mayor of Guangzhou Zhang Guangning said his city will give full support to the new shipyard's construction.

CSSC General Manager Chen Xiaojin said that CSSC will invest about 4.5 billion yuan (some 543.6 million US dollars) in the shipyard's construction, and build two docks capable of building ships of 300,000 dwt.

When the yard is completed in 2008, or one year ahead in 2007, Chen said, it may be capable of building ships from two million to three million dwt each year.

Both Guangzhou and Shanghai have been chosen shipbuilding centers by the CSSC, so as to help rank China top among global shipbuilders by 2015.

The CSSC has contracted with the Shanghai municipal government to build a new shipyard on Changxing island, off Shanghai, which will be the largest in the world.

This shipyard will help increase Shanghai's shipbuilding capacity to 12 million tons by 2015.

With one third of China's shipbuilding market, CSSC received approximately six million tons of shipbuilding orders in the first seven months of this year, with its on-hand orders totaling 9.6 million tons.
