China's Mainland, Taiwan Maintain Close Contact over Drowning Incident

Organizations in China's mainland and Taiwan have kept close contact over Tuesday's drowning of six mainland women at sea off Taiwan, sources with the mainland-based Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS) said Friday.

ARATS sent a letter to the Taiwan-Based Strait Exchange Foundation Friday, asking the latter to help transfer the personal information on the six drowned people and the information on relevant investigations to the mainland.

Earlier, ARATS had written letters to two Taiwan-based organizations for cross-Straits relations. It received two letters from the Strait Exchange Foundation Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to press reports in Taiwan, 26 mainland women entered two Taiwan speedboats bound for Taiwan early Tuesday morning. While trying to evade Taiwan coast guard patrols, the smugglers pushed the women into the sea, leading to the drowning of six women and the injury of two.

Red Cross organizations on the mainland and Taiwan have been making preparations to transport the 20 survivors back to their mainland homes.

An ARATS official said people smuggling groups in Taiwan have become increasingly rampant in luring women from the mainland to Taiwan for illegal businesses. Relevant parties in Taiwan should severely crack down on such criminal activities.

The official added that the mainland side has been fighting illegal immigration to Taiwan, which would have been more effective if it had cooperation from Taiwan.
