African Ministers to Hold WHO Meeting

Health ministers from 46 African countries will host the 53rd session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa scheduled to take place from Sept. 1 to 5 at South African largest CBD of the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg.

Health ministers from 46 African countries will host the 53rd session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa scheduled to take place from Sept. 1 to 5 at South African largest CBD of the Sandton Convention Center in Johannesburg.

According to the organizers, this year's meeting of the Regional Committee, WHO's Governing Body at the Regional level, will discuss a report on the work of WHO in the African Region in 2002, to be presented by the Regional Director Dr Ebrahim M. Samba.

The report will provide a comprehensive review of the work of WHO in Africa during the year, highlighting successes achieved and challenges faced in the pursuit of the Organization's mandate of helping to improve the health situation in Member States.

It will also discuss the implementation of the WHO 2002-2003 Program Budget, and progress reports on the implementation of specific resolutions adopted at the last Regional Committee meeting held in Harare, Zimbabwe, in 2002.

These are on communicable diseases, emergency and humanitarian action, integrated epidemiological surveillance of diseases, and the Regional strategies for mental health, non-communicable disease, adolescent health, and for immunization in the Region during the period 2003-2005.

Also high on the agenda of the meeting are discussions on a Strategy for Women's Health and reports on food safety, injury prevention and control, macroeconomics and health, strengthening of the role of hospitals in national health systems and scaling upthe interventions for combating HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis TB and malaria.

The others are on guinea worm eradication and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) preparedness and response in the African Region.

Round table discussions to be held on the sidelines of the meeting will cover the role of laboratory services in providing quality health care, safe motherhood, and emergency and humanitarian action.

The five-day meeting is expected to be attended by health minister from the 46 member states of WHO in the African Region; senior officials from WHO/Headquarters, including WHO's new Director General, Dr Jong Wook Lee, as well as representatives of United Nations agencies, funds and programs and a number of bilateral, multilateral and Inter-Governmental and Non-Governmental Organizations.
