Nineteen people of a big family, including six women and nine children, were killed and four others injured Sunday when the jeep in which they were traveling rammed into a bus in the wee hours in north India's Rajasthan state, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

Seventeen persons died on the spot while two children succumbed to their injuries later at a local hospital, PTI quoted a senior policeman as saying.

The jeep, carrying 23 members of a joint family, was on its wayto Bheru temple in Reegnus when it collided with a bus at 3 a.m. local time at Udaipuriya village in Jaipur district of the state, PTI said.

The jeep reportedly slipped beneath the bus upon collision, thus creating difficulties for rescue efforts.

The family was going to the temple to perform a ritual after a marriage ceremony, PTI said.

The bus driver has been detained and under interrogation, PTI said, adding that the bodies of the victims have been sent for postmortem.
