Commentary: Uphold Morality and Learning, Build a Strong Army and Prosperous Nation

On the eve of the 50th anniversary of the founding of the National University of Defense Technology, Chairman of the Central Military Commission Jiang Zemin wrote a school motto of "uphold morality and learning; build a strong army and prosperous nation" for the National University of Defense Technology.

This is not only encouragement for the university, but also a requirement for colleges and schools of the entire army. It shows the great importance the Central Committee of the CPC attached to the running of military colleges and schools under the new situation, and is of great guiding significance towards strengthening the building of military colleges and schools and cultivation of large numbers of new-type high caliber military personnel.

The school motto is concise and comprehensive and has rich connotation. The motto"uphold morality and learning; build a strong army and prosperous nation" has pointed out the basic direction of running military colleges and schools and talent cultivation in the new historic period. It not only specifies the historic mission of military colleges and schools, but also puts forward the lofty moral character and quality which the new-type high caliber military personnel must possess, it sets forth the dialectical unity between morality and talent, between theory and practice, between strengthening the army and rejuvenating the nation. It is the guidance for strengthening the building of military colleges and schools and accelerating the cultivation of human talents. It is our belief that the National University of Defense Technology and other military colleges and schools are sure to be able to shoulder the historic mission, earnestly study and implement the motto written by Chairman Jiang Zemin and run the military colleges and schools well.

Morality is the core quality of talents. The most fundamental requirement for morality is to uphold Marxism-Leninism, Mao Zedong Thought, Deng Xiaoping Theory and the important thought of "Three Represents" as our guideline in the building of military colleges and schools , stick to arming the minds with scientific theory, adhere to the absolute leadership of the Party over the army, resolutely obey the command of the CPC Central Committee and the Central Military Commission of the CPC, keep to the correct direction in running the military colleges and schools, maintain the steadfastness politically and purity ideologically and morally, and train��large number of new-type high caliber military personnel who have high political consciousness, lofty pursuit of life, selfless dedication to military career, stubborn fighting will and fine psychological quality.

Great learning is the demand of the times upon running the colleges and schools. The new military system characterized by informationization resulting from modern high-tech war involves many basic theories, specialized knowledge and complex systems. Without solid high-tech knowledge and comprehensive quality, it is impossible to shoulder the heavy task of military modernization drive. To have great learning means to consciously stand on the commanding height of global military high-tech, adapt oneself to the military change with Chinese characteristics and aim at the cutting edge of world science and education so as to cultivate new-type high quality military personnel who have rich cultural contents, dynamic pioneering spirit and proficient specialized knowledge.
