King Abdullah II of Jordan is to pay a landmark visit to Iran on Tuesday to discuss bilateral ties and key regional and international developments, the official IRNA news agency reported Monday.

King Abdullah, heading a high-ranking delegation, is to visit Iran at the official invitation of Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid-Reza Asefi said.

The future of Iraq and the role Iran and Jordan could play as its two important neighboring countries, as well as issues of mutual interest are among other topics to be brought up in talks between Abdullah and Khatami, Foreign Minister Kamal Kharrazi and other senior Iranian officials.

This is the first visit to Iran by the Jordanian monarch since his coming to office four years ago.

The Jordanian prime minister and several of other cabinet members will accompany King Abdullah in his visit.
