The appraisal results of China's top three sci-tech awards in 2003-the National Award for Natural Science, the National Award for Technological Invention and the National Award for Science and Technology Progress-have been unveiled on August 29. What a pity is that the first prize of the Technological Invention award still remained vacant, the sixth successive emptiness.

Last year saw the first prize of Natural Science Award filled after a vacancy of four years. Since then the whole sci-tech circle has been expecting a first prize for the Technological Invention award this year, but they are now disheartened.

According to the awards organizers, only internationally acknowledged inventions that exert a tremendous impact on scientific subject can receive the first prize. An invention must be the original. In the past few years, the state laid stress on tracking scientific frontline rather than develop things of its own and so the nation's invention competence is rather low. Besides, it needs time for inventions to get accepted by the society, to be industrialized, and yield profits.

Now the nation's sci-tech circle is making great efforts on technological inventions, and the Ministry of Science and Technology has also mapped out strategies, focusing on standards, talents and patents to push forward the nation's science and technology. It is reasonable to believe that the prize will be filled in the near future along with China's improved innovation environment and increased sci-tech input.

As learned there have been 696 projects in total applied for the three awards this year, and 201 of them passed initial appraisal, including 28 for the National Natural Science Award, 15 for the National Award for Technological Invention and 158 for the National Award for Science and Technology Progress.
