Chinese Defense Minister Meets Chilean Navy Chief

Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan met Tuesday with Miguel Angel Vergara, commander-in-chief of the Chilean Navy.

Chinese Defense Minister Cao Gangchuan met Tuesday with Miguel Angel Vergara, commander-in-chief of the Chilean Navy.

Cao, also vice-chairman of China's Central Military Commission and a state councilor, said China and Chile cherish a traditional friendship and their relations have progressed smoothly since theyforged diplomatic ties in 1970. Relations between their navies have also registered continuous development and they have sent warships to visit each other.

China values its friendship with Chile, said Cao, hoping that with efforts from both sides, exchanges between the two countries and two armed forces, navies in particular, will record steady andhealthy progress.

Cao also briefed the guest on China's defense and foreign policies.

Vergara said the Chilean navy attaches importance to developingrelations with the Chinese navy, and hoped his visit would enhancethe friendly ties between the two armed forces.
