Japanese PM Undergoes Surgery to Remove Benign Polyp

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon to remove a benign polyp from his colon at the International Medical Center of Japan in Tokyo.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi underwent surgery Wednesday afternoon to remove a benign polyp from his colon at the International Medical Center of Japan in Tokyo.

According to officials of the Prime Minister's Office, the operation was a success and Koizumi will return to work Thursday.

After being informed about the polyp, about 2 centimeters in diameter, in a checkup at the medical center earlier, the premier asked the doctors to remove it, the officials added.
