The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (TDC) and Swiss-based MCH Basel Exhibition Ltd, show organizer of BaselWorld, signed an agreement on Wednesday.

Under the new agreement, which marks a new era of partnership between Hong Kong and Basel, the world's largest jewelry and watchfair, Hong Kong exhibitors will enjoy prime location in a brand new exhibition edifice alongside the existing BaselWorld venue.

Exhibitors have also been guaranteed stable participation fees at a competitive rate. As BaselWorld's partner, TDC will contribute seed money to the new hall's renovation.

The signing was witnessed by State Secretary of the Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Franz von Diniken, and Financial Secretary for the HKSAR government Henry Tang. TDC Deputy Executive Director Frederick Lam and MCH Chief Executive Officer Rne Kamm co-signed the agreement.

TDC has organized Hong Kong's participation at the show since 1986. In 2003, a total of 312 companies joined the Hong Kong Pavilion - the largest group pavilion - in the Zurich venue of BaselWorld, though Hong Kong's participation had been disrupted bya Swiss health decree concerning SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).

BaselWorld 2004 will be held from April 15 to April 22.
