Nigerian President Meets Chinese Vice FM

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjoon Wednesday met with visiting Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Qiao Zonghuai at the president's hometown Ota in Nigeria's southwestern state of Ogun.

Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjoon Wednesday met with visiting Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Qiao Zonghuai at the president's hometown Ota in Nigeria's southwestern state of Ogun.

Vice foreign minister first conveyed Chinese President Hu Jintao's greeting to Obasanjo and Obasanjo also asked Qiao to convey his greeting to his Chinese counterpart.

During the meeting, Obasanjo said that he believed the 21st century is a century of China.

Obasanjo said that both Nigeria and China should enhance their political and economic relations as well as non-governmental ties.

Obasanjo also reiterated Nigeria's one-China policy, saying that he was confident that the Chinese government would eventually solve the Taiwai issue by herself.

The Chinese vice foreign minister expressed appreciation for Nigeria's one-China policy.

"China and Nigeria are big countries belonging to the third world," Qiao said, adding that "China has always attached great importance to China-Nigeria traditional friendship and is ready to work together with the Nigerian government and people to bring our friendly relations and cooperation to a new high."

Also attending the meeting included Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Wang Yongqiu and Chinese Consul General in Lagos Liu Yinghai as well as other Chinese and Nigerian officials.
