China Plays Scoreless Tie with Los Angeles Galaxy

Young goalkeeper Li Jian made three crucial saves Wednesday night to hold the Chinese national team for a scoreless tie with Los Angeles Galaxy at Carson, California.

Galaxy back-up goalkeeper Dan Popik also had two great saves, including one in the 81st when he stopped a 19-yard shot from Chinese Lu Xin that was deflected by Galaxy defender Ryan Suarez.

China started with only five members of its 2002 World Cup team-- defenders Li Weifeng and Yang Pu, midfielders Li Xiaopeng and Zhao Junzhe, and forward Qi Hong. On the Galaxy side, three starters had the night off -- defender Danny Califf, goalkeeper Kevin Hartman and midfielder Cobi Jones.

Galaxy Coach Sigi Schmid said after the game that Li Weifeng isthe best player in the Chinese team.

The game is not the first meeting between the two teams. Duringa visit to China in 2001, Galaxy defeated the Chinese national team, coached by Bora Milutinovic, 3-1, in Yuxi, Yunan province.
