Indian, US Troops Begin Joint Exercise near Chinese Border

For the first time, Indian and US Special Forces on Friday began a two-week exercise close to the Chinese border, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

For the first time, Indian and US Special Forces on Friday began a two-week exercise close to the Chinese border, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

Top Indian Army officials when contacted by PTI declined to give details about the exercise, merely saying it is in a "secret location" close to the Karakoram mountains.

PTI quoted officials as saying that almost battalion strength troops from each side were taking part in the exercises being heldat an altitude of more than 5,000 meters.

The US Special Forces, who have been conducting the exercises with their Indian counterparts in Agra and in Alaska have always evinced keen interest in holding exercises in Ladakh region which is very close to the Chinese border, PTI reported.

Meanwhile, replying to questions on the exercise, Indian Defense Minister George Fernandes reportedly said it is a militaryjoint exercise and it has no political significance.
