The Arab League (AL) is keen onpreserving the unity of Palestinian leadership, an AL spokesman said on Saturday.
"The league follows up with full attention the latest developments of the Palestinian file," Hisham Youssef told reporters, referring to Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas' resignation.
Youssef expressed hope that the drastic event would not adversely affect Palestine's stance in face of
Israel
's aggression and arrogance.
He said all aspects of the issue will be discussed by Arab foreign ministers, who will meet in Cairo next Tuesday and Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat accepted Abbas' resignation and asked him to run a caretaker cabinet until a new one is formed.
Arafat and Abbas have been involved in a power struggle over security control, casting a shadow over the implementation of the roadmap peace plan.
The internationally-drafted roadmap requires reciprocal steps to be taken by Israel and the Palestinians toward peace and envisions a full Palestinian statehood by 2005.
