Chinese Top Legislator Meets Japanese Political Party Leaders

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, met with leaders of five Japanese political parties on separate occasions here Saturday and Friday.

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee, met with leaders of five Japanese political parties on separate occasions here Saturday and Friday.

Wu is on an official goodwill visit to Japan.

The five leaders are Takako Doi, leader of the Social Democratic Party; Kanzaki Takenori, representative of the Komei Party; Tetsuzo Fuwa, chairman of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Japan; Kan Naoto, head of the Democratic Party;and Kumagai Hiroshi, leader of the New Conservative Party.

Wu told the party leaders that the new Chinese leadership attaches great importance to expanding Sino-Japanese friendly relations and promoting exchange and cooperation in various fields between the two countries.

He said both China and Japan should handle bilateral relations with vision and put them in a strategic perspective, and that at the same time, the two sides should carefully and properly deal with matters of concern to the other side.

He said despite different situations of various Japanese political parties, they all attach importance to and work hard for promoting Japan-China friendship. He added that he hopes members of these parties will continue to play an active role in promoting bilateral relations and strengthening party-to-party contacts.

Wu also reiterated China's stand on the case of chemical weapons left over in northeast China by Japanese invading troops during World War II, that caused a death and seriously affected several other local people recently.

The party leaders present shared the view that friendly relations between Japan and China are vital to Asia and the world as a whole. They all expressed their resolve that they will continue to work hard to promote bilateral friendly relations and cooperation.
