Moscow hopes that the future Palestinian government will pursue a responsible course and stick to the roadmap peace plan supported by the world community, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said Monday.

"Moscow is convinced that there is no other reasonable way of overcoming this crisis except the implementation of the road map plan. Among the first priorities are measures to combat extremism," Yakovenko said in a statement.

"The replacement of the Palestinian government is proceeding against an alarming regional background. Terrorist attacks againstIsraeli citizens, resumed after a two-month interval, are countered by Israel's rigorous and blood-shedding actions. It is clear that any Palestinian cabinet will be confronted with an extremely complicated situation," Yakovenko continued.

He also expressed Russia's determination to assist the Palestinian leadership and Israel in normalizing the situation andimplementing the roadmap plan jointly with other international mediators.

Yakovenko made the statement after Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat nominated Ahmed Qurei on Sunday as prime minister to replace Mahmoud Abbas, who resigned on Saturday.

Qurei, commonly known as Abu Ala, in his turn, said that he would accept the nomination if he receives guarantee of support from the United States and the European Union.

Moscow is a member of the Middle East Quartet, along with the European Union, the United Nations and the United States, which has drawn up the roadmap peace plan aiming to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
