China on Monday launched a nationwide crackdown on software piracy with law enforcement officers in Beijing, Shanghai, Sichuan Province and Guangdong Province seizing tens of thousands of pirated software products.
Shen Rengan, vice-director with the State Copyright Bureau of China, said the move represented the beginning of China's fight against software piracy in 2003.
Footage from China Central Television evening news showed packsof pirated software, being seized by several hundred law enforcement officers on Monday.

The campaign was designed to implement the outline of the action plan (2002-2005) formulated by the central government on fighting software piracy and promoting the software sector.
The nationwide campaign targets illegal production, marketing and illegally spreading software on the Internet, said the official.
The official said hardware producers installing pirated software and dealers of the hardware are also targeted in the campaign.
