An influential television journalist has been appointed to head a newspaper linked to an oil company currently embroiled in a clash with President Vladimir Putin's government.

Yevgeny Kiselyov was named editor of the Moskovskiye Novosti weekly, the Open Russia foundation said last Thursday. Open Russia said it had acquired the right to publish the paper and its English-language companion, the Moscow News.

An English-language Web site says the Open Russia Foundation was founded in 2001 by the Yukos oil company, whose chief executive is billionaire Mikhail Khodorkovsky.

Kiselyov is a former anchor of influential news programs on two TV networks that ran afoul of the Kremlin. He has been one of the figures at the center of debates over the Kremlin's treatment of media freedoms under Putin.

He worked first at a network that was taken over by the state-connected gas monopoly and then at one that was shut down earlier this year. In both cases, Kiselyov said the actions were motivated by the stations' criticism of the Kremlin.

The July arrest of a major Yukos shareholder on charges of defrauding the state in a 1994 privatization deal and tax evasion marked the start of a probe into the company. Critics say the probe is a politically driven campaign against Khodorkovsky, one of Russia's richest men.
