China Beat Syria 2-0 in Olympic Asian Zone Soccer Qualifier
Captain Du Wei scored two first-half goals to give China a 2-0 victory over Syria in the first leg of the second round of the Olympic Asian zone soccer qualifier here yesterday.

But China Head Coach Shen Xiangfu knew there would be more work ahead despite the victory.

"We have the second leg to play next week, it's not decided yet," he said.

Syria coach Mousa Shammas paid tribute to the Chinese squad after the match, saying the team's style of play represents "modern soccer."

"China played very well tonight. They won the match because they grabbed two good opportunities," said Shammas.

China opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Du rose unmarked in the penalty box to head in a corner from teammate Sun Xiang.

The Chinese duo produced another display of perfect teamwork in the 43rd minute as Du scored his second header of the match, also from a corner by Sun.

The host team could have further extended their lead one minute later, but forward Yu Tao's shot went just wide of the Syrian goal.

Syria, who were outplayed in terms of ball control, could only reply with sporadic long-range shots. Their best chance came in the 38th minute when Mahmoud Al-Amnah unleashed a shot from outside of the box, but it was batted away by Chinese goalkeeper An Qi.

Both sides seemed to run out of steam in the second half, which saw them create few good scoring opportunities.
