China's new leadership is ready to make joint efforts with the Finnish side to push forward Sino-Finnish relations in the new century, Luo Gan, a senior official of the Chinese Communist Party, said in Helsinki Wednesday when meeting Finnish Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen.

Luo told Vanhanen that China, which is under the new leadership, will attach great importance to developing relations with Finland as it did in the past. Furthermore it will take a more active and practical attitude toward expanding cooperation with Finland, Luo added.

Meanwhile, Luo gave a positive appraisal of the relationship between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Center Party of Finland.

He added that the CPC pays great attention to developing friendly ties in all fields with parties in Finland. He hoped that the two sides will have more exchanges of experience in party construction and will contribute to state-to-state relations between China and Finland.

Vanhanen, also deputy chairman of the Center Party of Finland, expressed his satisfaction with the relationship between his party and the CPC. He hoped to see constant progress in developing the relationship.

As a member of the European Union, Vanhanen said, Finland is willing to play an active role in China-EU cooperation.

The Finnish prime minister added that Finland's economy is dependent on international trade and therefore is happy to see China's economy is growing at a fast pace and is playing an increasingly important role in the world economy.

Earlier in the day, Luo also met separately with Finnish Justice Minister Johannes Koskinen and Interior Minister Kari Rajamaeki over cooperation in justice affairs.

Luo arrived in Helsinki on Tuesday evening to pay a three-day goodwill visit to the country from Reykjavik after visiting Iceland. Finland is the second leg of his four-nation tour, which will also bring him to Armenia and Moldova.

China and Finland established diplomatic relations in 1950. The two countries have maintained a sound relationship, especially in trade and economy in recent years. The trade volume between January and September 2002 reached 1.96 billion US dollars.
