China will make great efforts to help the new round of multilateral trade talks progress substantially, the Chinese delegation told Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Supachai Panitchpakdi Tuesday night.

Lu Fuyuan, head of the Chinese delegation for the Fifth Ministerial Conference of the WTO and China's commerce minister, and Du Qinglin, China's agriculture minister, made the remarks during a brief meeting with Supachai on the eve of the conference to begin Wednesday.

Supachai said he hoped China would play an important and constructive role in the new round of trade talks, known as the Doha Development Agenda that was launched at the last ministerial meeting in November 2001.

The Chinese delegation arrived in Cancun Tuesday. It was the first time for China to attend a ministerial conference as a WTO member.
