China's Top Legislator Hails His Three-nation Tour in Asia
China's top legislator Wu Bangguo Wednesday spoke positively of his visits to South Korea, Japan and the Philippines, where he also attended the fourth general assembly of the Association of Asian Parliaments for Peace(AAPP).

In a joint interview by the NHK and the Nihon Keizai newspaper, Wu, chairman of the Chinese National People's Congress Standing Committee, said the Sino-Japanese relations have remained good in general and the exchanges between the two countries have developed in an all-round way.

The Japanese people from various communities are enthusiastic about further developing the Japan-China ties, in which both the Japanese and Chinese sides have placed much confidence.

"This year marks the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship. And the Sino-Japanese relations have entered a new era of development," said Wu.

He called for continued high-level dialogue between the two countries so as to promote mutual political trust, and urged enhanced cooperation in various fields as well as frequent exchanges of personnel.

"We expect more Japanese young people to visit China, so they can get a deeper understanding of our country," said the Chinese top legislator.

Both sides must handle with discretion issues that the other side is concerned about, especially those left over by history and the Taiwan issue, he added.

His week-long visit to Japan has sent a clear signal that the new generation of the Chinese collective leadership will consistently pursue a friendly Japan policy, said the Chinese top legislator.

The meeting between Chinese President Hu Jintao and Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi in St. Petersburg, Russia, and his own visit fully demonstrated that China has always attached great importance to developing relations with Japan.

In the spirit of "taking history as a mirror and looking forward to the future," China is willing to promote in an all-round way the sound development of its ties with Japan on the basis of abiding by the three political documents signed between them, namely the Sino-Japanese Joint Statement, the Sino-Japanese Treaty of Peace and Friendship and the Sino-Japanese Joint Declaration, Wu said.

The smooth development of Sino-Japanese relations will not only benefit the two countries and two peoples but also make greater contributions to peace and development in Asia and the whole world.

Commenting on his visits to the Philippines, South Korea and Japan, Wu said he had extensive contacts with people from various communities and meetings with old friends, as well as made new friends.

The visits demonstrated that developing sustained and stable cooperation and good-neighborly relations with neighboring countries are major parts of China's foreign policy, he noted.

Fostering good-neighborliness is not an expedient but a long-term policy of China, Wu said. China will strive to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation with the three Asian nations and seek common development on the basis of "treating a neighbor in a friendly way and taking a neighbor as a partner."

Wu believed his visits have given a fresh impetus to China's ties with the three countries.

China and the Philippines are ready to further develop their long-term, stable and good-neighborly cooperation of mutual trust.

China and South Korea have agreed to promote cooperative partnership between the two countries in an all-round way in line with the consensus reached by the two heads of state.

China and Japan are willing to push forward their bilateral ties by the principle of "taking history as a mirror and looking forward to the future."

The visits, which have strengthened the friendly ties between China's National People's Congress (NPC) with parliaments in the three countries, are very important to improving understanding and friendship between the peoples and boosting the bilateral relations with the three countries, said Wu.

China and the three other countries all agreed that in a strategic perspective they should attach much importance to the relationship between China's NPC and the parliaments of the three countries, particularly to exchanges between young legislators from them so as to boost mutual trust and understanding, he noted.

Wu said he had discussions with legislators from other countries on the theme of "Toward A Hundred Years of Peace in Asia" during the fourth general assembly of the AAPP.

They agreed that under the current circumstances Asian parliaments should stick to peace and development, the two major themes of the times, strengthen dialogue and consultations on major regional and international issues and make new contributions to Asia's peace, stability and prosperity.
