Nearly two years after US President George W. Bush launched the global war on terror, US commander in Iraq Ricardo Sanchez Thursday suggested that the prolonged campaign will continue.

"It's clear that America is at war, but this is a long war. Itwill be a tough war that we will have to make some sacrifices," hetold a press conference.

"We'll have to make some negative sacrifices to counter this terrorism and make sure that America will never again get attack, the way it was on that day," he added, referring to the deadly attacks on America on the same day two years ago.

Echoing Bush, Sanchez believed that Iraq is the "next battlegroundin this world war on terrorism that we have been on for about two years. It is a war that will continue for some time."

"But there is absolutely no question in my mind that the American people are committed to winning this war and that we will in fact succeed. We will not allow America to be a battle ground for terrorism," he added.

Bush declared last Sunday that Iraq had become the central frontin the war on terrorism and vowed to keep his troops in the country to prevent American soil from being attacked.

"We will do what is necessary ... spend what is necessary, to achieve this essential victory in the war on terror, to promote freedom, and to make our own nation more secure," Bush said in aspeech demanding a larger budget for policing and rebuilding Iraq.

However, many Iraqis were frustrated by the thought that theUnited States is making itself safer by putting Iraq in danger.

Five deadly car bombings that probably targeted US interests inthe last month killed over 120 people, most of whom were Iraqicivilians.

In the latest suicide attack at a US Defence Department officein Iraq's northern city of Arbil, three Iraqis were killed and 40 others wounded. Six American staff members were injured in the attack.
