Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Thursday offered festival blessings to more than 50 counselors of the Chinese central government and members of a research office of the Chinese Communist Party Central Committee.

On behalf of the Party's Central Committee and the Chinese government, the premier extended his best wishes to the scholars as China celebrates Mid-Autumn Festival on Thursday. The festival falls on Aug. 15 on the Chinese lunar calendar.

During their two-hour discussion, about 10 of the scholars put forward suggestions on major issues concerning the country. The premier listened carefully to them and voiced his answers or comments.

The suggestions involved medical care in rural China, education, environmental protection and other social and economic problems.

The premier called on those scholars to continue their important role of participating in government and political affairs and offering their advice.

He encouraged the scholars to continue to report the real situation of society and the people's public opinion to the government, and to offer their critical views on the work of the government.
