Japan's Naha District Court on Friday sentenced a US Marine to three and half years in jail for raping and beating a Japanese woman in May.

Lance Corporal Jose Torres, 21, was charged with beating and raping a 19-year-old Japanese girl in the town of Kin, Okinawa prefecture, on May 25 after they met at a restaurant. He then escaped back to the US base there but was arrested by US military later.

The US military finally handed over Torres to the Japanese police for arraigning due to repeated requirement from the Japanese government.

Under the Japan-US Status of Forces Agreement, US servicemen suspected of having committed crimes are free from Japanese custody before indicted. But following the raping case of a 12-year-old girl by three US soldiers in 1995, the US military agreed to give "sympathetic consideration" to hand over suspects in serious crimes including rape and murder.

Wrongdoings conducted by US soldiers have been haunting residents in Okinawa. And local groups and government have repeatedly called for revising the agreement or getting US forces out of there.
