According to The Associated Press, the officers were pursuing a white BMW without license plates driven by a group of highway bandits who had been holding up vehicles on the main road between Baghdad and the
Jordan
ian border. The police were in pick-up trucks.
When they failed to slow down as they approached the checkpoint on a road leading to the resort of Saddamiyat al-fallujah, US troops opened fire.
Eyewitnesses told CNN that 14 Iraqi police were killed in the incident, which occurred early Friday morning. Other reports have put the death toll at between 11 and 14 police.
Police officer Assem Mohammed, one of those involved in the incident, told Reuters that a group of police and US-backed security forces were chasing thieves shortly after midnight when US soldiers opened fire.
