A frank and earnest exchange of views on differences between China and Germany reflected the maturity of bilateral relations, Chairman of China's National People's Congress Standing Committee Wu Bangguo said here Friday.

During a meeting with German President Johannes Rau, Wu said the two countries maintained long-term, stable, friendly and cooperative relations, which substantially benefited both sides.

Wu said the two countries carried out broad cooperation on many major international issues as both were able to perceive bilateral relations from a global view.

Wu praised the important exchanges between the National People's Congress (NPC) and the federal parliament of Germany, especially among the special committees under the two parliaments.

He said parliamentary exchanges were flexible and covered a wide range of topics. Such exchanges facilitated communication on legislative issues, and helped to improve understanding and friendship between the two peoples.

Wu said the NPC was ready to further strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the German parliament.

Rau expressed admiration for the achievements of China in its reform and opening to the outside world, saying he was deeply impressed with the social and economic progress during his present and previous visits.

He said bilateral relations had developed satisfactorily in recent years as leaders kept regular contacts and the two parliaments carried out frequent exchanges.
