The State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) of China and its Singaporean regulatory counterpart, the Health Sciences Authority (HSA), signed a Memorandum of Understanding here on Friday to further enhance the cooperation between the two agencies in the area of drug administration.

The scope of the MOU broadly covers the exchange of information and expertise between the two agencies on drug administration, including traditional Chinese medicines, chemical drugs, biological products and medical devices.

Zheng Xiaoyu, Commissioner of SFDA said that SFDA and HSA have similar roles in regulating drugs and health-related products to safeguard public health.

He said that the document signing marks a significant milestone for both agencies in terms of international regulatory cooperation.

Tan Chor Hiang, Chief Executive Officer, HSA said Singapore had already established a good working relationship with the predecessor of SFDA, the State Drug Administration of China in the area of drug administration.

The signing of the document "will formalize this relationship and is another affirmation of the long-term friendship between our two countries," he said.

HSA is Singapore's national regulator of all therapeutic products. It also operates the national blood bank.

Formed in 2003, SFDA is the competent authority of China's Ministry of Health in drug regulation. Its responsibility also includes providing comprehensive supervision on the safety management of food, health food and cosmetics.
