British police investigating a full-scale security alert that closed Gatwick Airport for five hours ruled out Saturday the possibility of an attempted terrorist attack.

Two people were released on police bail "pending further interview" Saturday after a car without number plates was found abandoned in the south terminal of the London's second largest airport on Friday night, said a Sussex Police spokeswoman.

A third man is still being questioned in connection with the incident, she added.

Bomb disposal experts carried out three controlled explosions on the Ford Escort before it was removed for forensic examination.

However, the spokeswoman said, "The circumstances (of the incident) are not believed to be terrorist related."

Flights continued to operate during the alert, but it caused disruption on surrounding road and rail networks, parts of which were closed during the incident.

Following the controlled explosions, officers carried out a "precautionary sweep" of the tunnel.

"Fortunately this one has turned out to be nothing untoward," said police.
