Majority Estonians Favor EU Membership

Over 73 percent of the votes counted in the Estonian referendum on European Union membership by 8.15 p.m. Sunday favor Estonia's joining the EU and 26.78 percent were against, shows the Estonian National Elections Committee homepage.

Over 73 percent of the votes counted in the Estonian referendum on European Union membership by 8.15 p.m. Sunday favor Estonia's joining the EU and 26.78 percent were against, shows the Estonian National Elections Committee homepage.

By then 334 of the 652 polling stations sent their preliminary results of the voting that took place at the beginning of this week, and 9 polling stations had sent the results of Sunday voting.The votes of 81,177 voters, around one-tenth of all voters, had been counted.

Final turnout figures still take some time to count. By 4 p.m. 51.3% of voters had cast their votes. Polling stations were open till 8 p.m.
