German president visits Guangxi

German President Johannes Rau visited the well-known scenic city of Guilin in south China Monday.

German President Johannes Rau visited the well-known scenic city of Guilin in south China Monday.

Accompanied by Lu Bing, acting chairman of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region government, and Wang Yuefei, mayor of Guilin, Rau paid a sightseeing visit to the Lijiang River, one of the major tourist attractions of the city, on Monday afternoon.

On a tourist boat, Lu briefed the German president about the exchanges and cooperation between Guangxi and Germany. He said that some cities in Guangxi and Germany have become friendly cities.

Guangxi also witnessed a trade surge with Germany, Lu said. Theregion's exports to Germany were valued at 28.52 million US dollars, and imports 45.79 million US dollars, from January to June. Lu added that 19 German-invested enterprises had been established in Guangxi.

The acting chairman expressed the hope that the cooperation in the fields of trade and economy, science and technology and tourism could be further strengthened.

Rau's visit to China is scheduled from Sept. 10 to 17 at the invitation of Chinese President Hu Jintao. He left Guilin for HongKong Monday night.
