Experts attending the "21st century and China's economy" forum agreed China needs its own civil aircraft on the way towards opening up and globalization.

They said the ability to manufacture aircraft can demonstrate the national level of science and industrial technology.

China will need another 1,700 new aircraft in the next 20 years, with a total value of 120 billion US dollars. The market is attractive enough for domestic aviation producers, said Liu Gaozhuo, general manager of China Aviation Industry Corporation I.

The Chinese government listed civil aircraft development as one of the five new industries. The strategy to develop the western region will also provide good opportunities for domestic regional aircraft.

Liu said producing large aircraft will enable China to transfer from a big aviation nation to a strong aviation nation.

China has put priority on regional aircraft in the civil aviation development plan. It is estimated that some 600 regional aircraft will be needed here in the next 20 years, one tenth of global demand.
