The Swedish police said Tuesday night that they had arrested a 35-year-old man suspected of the killing of Foreign Minister Anna Lindh, who was stabbed to death as she shopped in a department store in Stockholm last week.

The police said the unidentified suspect was seized in a restaurant near the Rasunda soccer stadium in a suburb of the Swedish capital. Witnesses said the man was watching soccer on television when plainclothes officers arrested him without a struggle. There was no immediate confirmation of widespread reports that the man had been identified from a videotape taken by closed-circuit television cameras in the NK store where Ms. Lindh was stabbed. A Swedish news agency said the suspect had a record of 18 previous convictions for fraud, theft and violence with knives.

The Swedish police have been under particularly strong pressure to make an arrest, in part because the 1986 killing of Prime Minister Olof Palme remains formally unsolved to this day.

Ms. Lindh, a strong supporter of adopting the euro, was killed just days before the country voted in a referendum not do do so by a large margin. It remained unclear whether her killer had political motives.
