UN 58th General Assembly opens

The General Assembly of the United Nations opened here Tuesday its 58th session. UN General-Secretary Kofi Annan and delegates from 191 member states attended the opening ceremony.

The General Assembly of the United Nations opened here Tuesday its 58th session. UN General-Secretary Kofi Annan and delegates from 191 member states attended the opening ceremony.

Julian Robert Hunte, President of the 58th General Assembly, declared the session open. He first proposed a minute of silent prayer for the UN staff members who lost their lives in recent bomb attack in UN headquarters in Baghdad.

The General Assembly will begin two-week general debate next Tuesday. Eighty-eight heads of state and government, including US President George W. Bush, French President Jacques Chirac and Russian President Vladimir Putin, are expected to address the session.

The session will focus on wide-ranging topics, including peace and security, development, the fight against terrorism, disarmament and nuclear proliferation and the role of the United Nations.
