Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Monday retained Heizo Takenaka as financial services minister and Yoriko Kawaguchi as foreign minister, while picking industrial revival minister Sadakazu Tanigaki to be finance minister in his reshuffled cabinet, Kyodo News reported.

The premier also retained Shigeru Ishiba as chief of the Defense Agency, according to a new cabinet lineup read out by Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda, who was also retained.

Many heavyweights in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, which reelected Koizumi as party leader on Saturday, had sought for Takenaka and Kawaguchi to be replaced with politicians.

The situation led to speculation that Takenaka might not continue to serve concurrently as the financial services minister and the economic and fiscal policy minister, but Koizumi decided to keep Takenaka in both posts.

Tanigaki will replace octogenarian Masajuro Shiokawa who has been ill recently.
