Macao stages Portuguese-Speaking World Seminar

The Macao, Portuguese-Speaking World Seminar opened Monday as a warm-up for the opening of the high-level China-Portuguese Speaking Countries Economic and Trade Co-operation Forum slated for October in Macao.

The Macao, Portuguese-Speaking World Seminar opened Monday as a warm-up for the opening of the high-level China-Portuguese Speaking Countries Economic and Trade Co-operation Forum slated for October in Macao.

Edmund Ho Hau Wah, chief executive of Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) government attended the opening ceremony for the seminar, which drew over 100 scholars and expertsfrom Portugal, Canada and China's mainland and Hong Kong.

During the three-day event, group discussions will be held on the historical background, the prospect of economic and trade cooperation and the Portuguese language promotion and cultural exchanges between Macao and Portuguese-speaking countries.

Jose Maneiras, vice president of the organizing committee of the seminar, who is a Macao-born Portuguese, said that the seminarheld ahead of the forum sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce is important to Portuguese-speaking countries in the way that they can better understand Macao's role as a platform for the development of economy and trade between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, which has been designated by both the Central Government and the Macao SAR government.

Maneiras said that to many Portuguese-speaking people, Macao isan ideal place for travel and doing business as Portuguese is the official language in Macao.
