6 retained, 11 new picked in Japan's cabinet reshuffle

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Monday retained six ministers and picked 11 new ones in his cabinet reshuffle on all 17 ministers.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi on Monday retained six ministers and picked 11 new ones in his cabinet reshuffle on all 17 ministers.

The retained include Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi; Health, Labor and Welfare Minister Chikara Sakaguchi; Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Yoshiyuki Kamei and Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda.

Director General of the Defense Agency Shigeru Ishiba, and Financial Services Minister and State Minister in Charge of Economic and Fiscal Policy, Heizo Takenaka, also kept their posts in the reshuffle.

The new cabinet ministers include Justice Minister Daizo Nozawa, Finance Minister Sadakazu Tanigaki, Environment Minister Yuriko Koike and Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Minister Takeo Kawamura.

The other major ministers newly appointed Monday are Economy, Trade and Industry Minister Shoichi Nakagawa, Chairman of NationalPublic Safety Commission Kiyoko Ono, and State minister in charge of administrative reform and deregulation, Kazuyoshi Kaneko.

Koizumi was reelected as LDP president on Saturday and is expected to dissolve the House of Representatives next month for ageneral election in November.

The premier will give a press conference later in the day.
