An explosion in Baoji, a city in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, has killed at least three people and injured another five, local officials said Monday.

The blast occurred in the city's Jinwei Road at about 10:46 a.m.on Sunday when an iron box dropped from a jeep and blew up suddenly, according to eyewitnesses.

One woman died at the scene while another two died later in hospital after failing all emergency treatment, said Li Min, deputy director of the Baoji City Bureau of Public Security.

The jeep's driver and another four passers-by, including a child, were also injured, according to Li, who is in charge of the investigation.

"Our preliminary investigation shows that the explosion was planned," Li said, adding that the police are still looking into the case.
