China, sticking to its diplomatic principles of "treating neighbors as friends and as partners", pledges to seek the common interests and progress of all countries in the region.

Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Monday in Boao of south China's Hainan Province, at a ceremony to launch the International Convention Center of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), that Asia is indispensable to China while China also contributes to Asia's prosperity.

Regional cooperation among Asia's diversified cultures, though starting late, has seen rapid progress and shown great potential, Wang said. Mutual fusing and complementing has become a driving force and an outstanding feature of the regional cooperation in Asia.

The Boao Forum for Asia, based in Asia while facing the world, complies with the interests of Asia and reflects the voice of Asia, Wang said, adding that the forum not only has a special position among regional cooperative mechanisms, but also plays an indispensable role in boosting overall regional cooperation.

Japanese Ambassador to China Fumiyo Anami said the economic development of China is not a threat, but a challenge as well as an opportunity for Japan and the other countries in Asia and the Pacific region. Japan will make efforts to intensify dialogues with other members, he said.

R.S. Lodha, former chairman of the Federation of India Chamber of Commerce and Industry and also a member of board of the forum, said "Asia's time has now come. If this century is to belong to Asia, it is the time for us to pool our knowledge and work together, so that it would be impossible for the world to ignore us."

Lodha stressed that Asia's progress demands every member go for regional economic integration and cooperation. In our desired multi-polar world, all Asian members should join hands to meet challenges, he said.

The newly built convention center, covering 37,000 square meters, serves as a permanent meeting ground. The annual conference of the forum this year will be held here from Nov. 2 to3, with eight Asian leaders and about 1,000 delegates attending.
