Foreigners appointed provincial government consultants

Martin Broughton, board chairman of British American Tobacco, has been appointed a consultant to the government of southwest China's Yunnan Province.

Martin Broughton, board chairman of British American Tobacco, has been appointed a consultant to the government of southwest China's Yunnan Province.

He will serve a five-year term as one of 53 foreigners from 16 countries and regions appointed as consultants Monday by the provincial government.

They will serve for the government's consulting group on economic and social development. As the province's closest investing and cooperating partners, the will introduce Yunnan to the world to attract more overseas investment and give valuable advice to the government.

Most of the consultants are heads of well-known multinationals, such as Chief Executive of Nescafe (China) Josef M. Mueller and President of Siemens China Ernst H. Behrens.

After their appointments, the consultants discussed with provincial leaders issues on environmental protection and sustainable development.

The government would attach great importance to the consultants' advice and put it into practice as soon as possible, said Xu Rongkai, governor of the province.
