More than 8,300 business people from over 80 countries and regions have flocked to the Fifth Zhejiang Investment and Trade Symposium, which opened here yesterday.

Taking place in the coastal city of Ningbo, it is the largest annual business promotion event in the East China province.

The six-day event, sponsored by the Zhejiang provincial government, will cover investment promotion, commodity exhibitions, forums and the introduction of new skills and technology.

Zhejiang, which has the country's most developed private sector, urged its enterprises to take the opportunity to further expand their business scope through more "face-to-face" contacts with domestic and foreign firms at the symposium.

This year's event has a special international hall which is hosting 23 overseas exhibitors from 16 countries and regions including Invest-UK, the Swedish Embassy and HBSC, according to the organizers.

"Promoting investment is the key topic for this year's event," said Zhong Shan, vice-governor of the province.

"We welcome overseas investors to Zhejiang and we also encourage our enterprises to expand their business outside the province," he noted.

The top priorities of Zhejiang's development strategy in the coming years will be to forge closer economic ties with the neighbouring economic powerhouse of Shanghai and attract more investment from Taiwan Province.

A major feature of this year's symposium is the Seconnd China International Consumer Goods Fair, which was also launched yesterday.

The fair focuses on demonstrating Zhejiang's developed light industries, mainly in sectors such as household appliances, textiles and food.
