China kept a clean sheet at the 12th Asian women's volleyball championship after beating Australia in straight sets in a group round-robin match Tuesday in Ho Chi Minh City.

Defending champion China powered past Australia 25-14, 25-19 and 25-17 for its fourth consecutive victory and cruised into the quarterfinals as the winners of the Group E.

After losing the first round, Australia contested hotly in the following two sets to keep a narrow lead over China in the beginning, but they went down tamely afterward and faded in both sets.

Chinese women had 27 efficient blocks, but they also had eight serving errors during the one hour match.

China had four victories in the tournament till now, however, Xu Li, the team leader of China, said that they were not the aim for China.

"Every game before the World Cup is practice for China," said Xu, who also serves as the director of China Volleyball Administration. "We want to have the berth for the 2004 Athens Olympic Games, so we have to finish in top three in the World Cup.The Asia championship is just a high-level practice for us."

The top two finishers in the championship will qualify for the World Cup, which will be held in Japan in November.
