The China Petrochemical Shareholding Company has decided to invest 2.2 billion yuan (265 million US dollars) in building a 666-km crude oil pipeline in east China, with a 53.5-km section on the seabed of Hangzhou Bay.

The pipeline, which will run northwards from Ningbo City of Zhejiang Province to Jiangsu Province, via Shanghai, is expected to be completed in April 2004. It has been designed to transport 40 million tons of crude oil annually.

The Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. Ltd. of the Republic of Korea has won the bid to lay the section on the seabed, and construction will start soon.

The pipeline is built to transport imported crude oil to petrochemical companies in the Yangtze River Delta, which are estimated to be able to refine and process nearly 60 million tons of crude oil by 2005.
