Starting today, Shanghai Unicom is offering local CDMA users preferential prepaid accounts bundled with a cheaper Nokia phone costing 1,280 yuan (US$154), in a bid to attract more subscribers.

To make sure the new service doesn't affect the high-end image of its CDMA product, the company requires Shanghai users to spend at least 40 yuan each month - the first bottom-line spending imposed on prepaid users in China.

To apply for the package, users pay 100 yuan for a UIM card and an additional 500 yuan deposit. By paying 39.6 yuan per month for the account, a user receives up to 99 minutes of free local calls.

Each additional minute will cost 0.4 yuan while a short text message will cost 0.1 yuan.

China Unicom, which owns Shanghai Unicom, has been raking in abundant profits from users of its Global System for Mobile Communications services, as it has attracted many low-end users by offering lower rates than its bigger rival China Mobile.

However, the company's code-division multiple access, or CDMA, service is still losing money as the user base growth of this service is dismayingly lagging behind targets.

"The launch of this prepaid card can help us boost our user base much faster," said Wu Wei, spokesman of Shanghai Unicom.

"We require the minimum monthly fee in Shanghai to maintain the high-end service of the CDMA network." (Shanghai Daily news)
