Chinese FM meets with counterparts from African, Arab countries

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing on Thursday met with his counterparts from some African and Arab countries on the sidelines of the 58th session ofthe United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing on Thursday met with his counterparts from some African and Arab countries on the sidelines of the 58th session ofthe United Nations General Assembly in New York.

At a working breakfast with his counterparts from Mozambique, Nigeria, South Africa, Comoros, Tunis, Namibia, Ghana and the Democratic Republic of Congo, Li briefed them on China's preparation for the second ministerial meeting of the China-Africa  Cooperation Forum scheduled for December this year in Ethiopia andChina's follow-up efforts to obtain the goals set by the forum.

Li noted that despite great changes in the world, the partnership China forged with African countries over the past decades will remain unchanged. The development of this partnershipis in the common interest of both sides.

Li thanked these African countries for their persistent supportto China over the past years and expressed readiness to enhance coordination and cooperation with them in bilateral relations and within the framework of the United Nations.

During his meeting with African Union Commission Chairman AlphaOumar Konare, Li said that the AU had played a positive role in resolving regional and international issues since it came into operation. He added that China has attached great importance to the role and influence of the bloc and kept good relations with it.Li predicted that cooperation between China and some African groups will enter a new stage.

In his meeting with foreign ministers of the six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, Li said China and GCC countries had supported each other on international and regional issues and their cooperation had been very fruitful. China has given priority to developing relations with the GCC and its memberstates and is willing to strengthen consultation mechanism with the group in a bid to explore new thinking and new approach to enhance the cooperation.

Li also met with Amr Moussa, secretary-general of the League ofArab States. The two leaders exchanged views on a wide range of international issues, including the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, Iraq and the fight against terrorism. They agreed to strengthen consultation on international issues and further substantiate the cooperation between China and the Arab states.

Also on Thursday, Li met with Central African President Francois Bozize, German Deputy Chancellor and Foreign Minister Joseph Fischer and Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul to discuss bilateral and international issues.
