The 16 members of a scientific expedition team trapped in an isolated island in the Tibet Autonomous Region were saved by soldiers Friday.

Around 5:20 p.m., the rescue group sent by the Ngari Military Sub-Division of the military area command of northwest China's Xinjiang Autonomous Region, stationed in Ngari Prefecture of Tibet, found the stranded team on an isolated island in a river that runsbetween Gerze and Rutog, two sparsely populated counties in the west of Tibet.

The six members who were reported to be suffering from the coldwere getting better and the rest were in a stable condition, said Donmdan, deputy commander of Ngari Military Sub-Division, the rescue team leader, via satellite phone.

The expedition team, consisting of 13 journalists, one guide and two drivers, set off in two trucks and three four wheel drive vehicles on Sept. 2.

By Sept. 19, the team had traversed three uninhabited areas of Lop Nur, the Altun Mountains and Hoh Xil.

When the team was passing through a river between a salt lake and Bairab Co Lake on the morning of Sept. 20, two trucks carryingsupplies got stuck in the river.

One truck were pulled out of the river, said Donmdan, who set off with 31 soldiers on Sunday night, carrying equipment includinga tractor, two trucks, a water tanker, edible oil, food and medicine.

Donmdan said they had came across great difficulty on the way to the site because of the tough terrain and a lack of oxygen in the rarefied air.

Xu Kongming, commander of Ngari Military Sub-Division, said they had sent another rescue team to receive the first rescue teamand the journalists.
