Security meeting orders to arrest suspects killing 30 in eastern Uganda

A security meeting has given the leadership of Nakapiripirit district in northeastern Uganda's Karamoja region three days to arrest those who killed 30 innocent people and raid cattle in neighboring Katakwi district on Sept. 20.

Michael Lotee Lokawa, special presidential assistant in charge of disarmament and development in Karamoja region, was quoted on Friday by Radio Uganda as saying that the meeting attended by Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) 3rd division commander Col. Andrew Guti also ordered to recover the guns used and cattle stolen by the raiders.

The ultimatum was issued after heavily armed Karimojong warriors last Saturday killed 30 people at the Opeuro-Audot internally displaced persons' camp in Ngariam sub-county in Katakwi district. The warriors reportedly numbered about 200 and took about 500 head of cattle from the camp.

Lotee said failure to fulfil this would result in confiscation of all cattle belonging to the suspects believed to be from the counties of Bokora, Chekwi and Pian.

He said about 4,000 head of cattle belonging to Lochangos Kraals in Olachat sub-county have already been rounded up.

The Karimojong warriors have intensified their attacks in the northeastern region since this month.

Meanwhile, UPDF 3rd division spokesman Lt. Kazoora Mbire said a helicopter reconnaissance had established the location of the warriors and their loot, according to a local media report.

Army spokesman Maj. Shaban Bantariza said the cattle numbering between 1,000 and 2,000 were abandoned in Lolacat sub-county in Nakapiripirit district.

"we have the cows but the warriors have fled. We are now asking clan leaders to identify the warriors," he added.
